Loud and Proud [Jun. 19th, 2009|10:54 am]

It's Pride weekend in Columbus, yet again. This year should be different. This year will be a party, yet again, but I feel that it should have an undercurrent of rage.

It's been 40 years since the Stonewall Riots. 40 YEARS and we're really not a whole lot better off. We're not getting arrested in droves anymore but we're still treated like second-class citizens. I mean, we helped vote a black man into office and yet even his legal team DEFENDS the Defense of Marriage Act.

I say we celebrate what we have but be ready to throw rocks at a moment's notice.

40 years indeed, unfortunately no one seems to remember it. Nor even Canada this year celebrates 40 years since the decriminalization of gay sex, and of course the only problem facing Vancouver's gays is the closure of a gay bar (due to lack of business).

Well, gays in Canada are certainly treated better there. In a general sense, anyway.

I suspect that the general aura of discrimination has been slowly fading. While it's hard to celebrate that which is fading but not yet gone, it's worth remembering.

The aura of discrimination may be fading, but it's still present. My feeling is that people have forgotten about Pride as a protest and just treat it like a block party. That scares me a little.

I can't really argue that. What I can say is that the protest part of it is mostly about the people who'd object to a bunch of people getting together to celebrate being gay. In the absence of people getting ruffled by it... we've largely won.

We still have plenty of them. Ohio's kind of bassackwards that way.
