More Astonishment from Cassini [Nov. 28th, 2009|08:10 am]

anziulewicz

FROM THE ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY:

Explanation:
What's happening on the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus? Enormous ice jets are erupting. Giant plumes of ice have been photographed in dramatic fashion by the robotic Cassini spacecraft during this past weekend's flyby of Saturn's moon Enceladus. Pictured above, numerous plumes are seen rising from long tiger-stripe canyons across Enceladus' craggy surface. Several ice jets are even visible in the shadowed region of crescent Enceladus as they reach high enough to scatter sunlight. Other plumes, near the top of the above image, appear visible just over the moon's sunlit edge. That Enceladus vents fountains of ice was first discovered on Cassini images in 2005, and has been under close study ever since. Continued study of the ice plumes may yield further clues as to whether underground oceans, candidates for containing life, exist on this distant ice world.

Dear Bravo,

Please make sure these attention whores are NOT rewarded for their actions. Please do not allow them to be a part of The Real Housewives of Washington, D.C.. While it's probably best that some 40-something saucy booze hound was the one who managed to infiltrate the event rather than someone yelling, "Allah Ackbar!" (or whatever those other crazy fundies yell before they go kaboom), this is a horrible precedent to set.

Thank you,

Waiting... [Nov. 27th, 2009|09:40 pm]

[Current Location |On the go...]

As I write this, I am waiting to run into coworkers going to another farewell party. It's for someone I like. The venue however looks like to be a club wherein Abercrombie kids in college will go crazy on the dance floor. Rough. I probably won't stay long at all.

Earlier, I got my hands on another baritone guitar. This one had no apparent manufacturing defects unlike the first, and offered a beastly range of sound. The whole idea of playing a baritone might give me a bit of a creative burst, but I still long to start a band or join a band with people I know.

Just as well. Even earlier today I had completed a full Black Friday shift. It went by quickly, but had a sour ending with a team communication blip that made me and my store look a bit bad for someone. Not great, but many opportunities to shine were met.

Not much else to report for today, folks. Tomorrow we may set up our Chrisas tree!

I made a deal with Dave that if I got a Wii, he'd get me a Wii Fitness for Christmas. I know a few friends have a Wii on here, so do you think a Wii Fitness would be something I'd be able to do? Would it be beneficial? I'd like to start exercising more at the apt. and I want something that will keep my attention.

Let me know what you think! :)

I meant to mention [Nov. 27th, 2009|05:39 pm]

msomega
My LJ has been discovered by my classmates (Sup Chris G!), which, in the wake of a very recent story about a local teacher being fired for some tiny nothing pictures she had on facebook (posing with a glass of wine in Italy, and a beer in London, while on a European tour), has me a bit concerned. It's not necessarily that I'm concerned that my classmates (at least not those ones) would sell me out somehow, it's that I am cognizant of the necessity of remembering what a stranger in a strange land I am down here in Georgia.

I am a big proponent of living one's life out loud, with transparency, with a firm sense of yourself, of who you are, what you care about, what you believe in, and what you stand for. I'm a retired goth girl, a drinker, a trekkie, a crazy liberal, a math n science nerd, and a pretty gross pervert; those things are all okay with me; I like them being on the record. Everyone should have a forum in which to talk about herself, and this one has been mine for over seven years. However, I also have to apply for internships in a week's time, in the deep red south.

So I suppose I am going to swallow my values a little bit and lock it all down, and delete a lot of my info page. I've locked everything down to friends-only on facebook, although I'm not sure it's enough; in a very competitive field, it's unfortunately not always easy to tell who your friends are, especially in situations where they need only be "internet brave" to tear you down. Having a trusting nature may not do me any favors.

So it's time to conceal some of my identity, at least for awhile. Here's to the death of fun.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday. Wish me luck on finals!

These are probably bits of randomness that would be better off on Twitter, but my day is not set up to be a Twitter day today. I'm really only on Twitter for spans of time when I have data entry to do, and today is a scanning-and-updating day, not a data-entry day.

So you get the benefits of brain-bit-ness here on LJ, my Gentle Readers.

* Whoever invents a collapsible, telescoping QUAD cane that can fit in a backpack, versus my sleek and sexy folding spy cane, will have my undying love and gratitude. Today feels like snow and signals the return of Cyborg Proserpina.

* This happened a week or so ago, but is still having ripple effects on my psyche, especially when cooking meals as involved as yesterday's. I can break Pyrex BY SHEER FORCE OF WILL. Fear me.

How I kicked Thanksgiving in the face. [Nov. 27th, 2009|10:04 am]

djmrswhite
10 AM - Made french toast with day-old challah, Nutella and whipped cream. You know what else is good if you don't think about it too much? Those Jimmy Dean pork sausage patties that you heat and serve. Did that and then, like it was meant to be, the Jimmy Dean float went past on my TV screen and people were dressed like sticks of butter.

11 AM - My new thing of turkey is simpler than it was before. Normally I wrap the whole bird in bacon so that it doesn't need basting, put garlic cloves under the skin, apple and onion and rosemary in the cavity, thyme and sage and root vegetables in the pan. But last week I watched Martha Stewart shove softened butter under the skin and then just salt and pepper it. So I tried that. Two sticks of softened butter evenly distributed under the entire breast area of the turkey. Then I coated the whole thing in kosher salt and pepper. Stuffed the cavity with fresh thyme, sage, rosemary, flat-leaf parsley. Basted it every 20 minutes for like 3ish hours (14.5lb bird). When it came time to eat the turkey, butter had saturated every cubic centimeter and turned it narcotic.

12 PM - Chopped yams, carrots, parsnips. Olive-oiled and salted. Oven for an hour.

12:30 - Made green bean casserole with Cream of Mushroom soup and those crispy canned onions.

1 PM - Rolled out thawed pie crust that my friend Jonathan and I had made on Sunday. Made other people chop Granny Smith apples. Sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger and flour and butter added. The pie crust kept falling apart and separating as I rolled it out, so I patchworked it into the dish and on top. A Frankenpie. Wound up delicious anyway.

2 PM - Tried a recipe for white cheddar cheese biscuits. Totally easy. Made [info]mattycub grate the cheese and we talked about which bands angered and scared the congregations of churches we attended as teenagers. Punk ran a close second to metal, which had the edge of being from the actual devil instead of from dudes who were just philosophical nihilists.

3 PM - Sat down to eat all the food. [info]xtreem_aaron made a gang of mac+cheese and his man Brian brought fancy beers and wines. Neighbor Jill contributed homemade stuffing. [info]zombietruckstop brought a lasagna. [info]fidgetcub somehow pulled brussels sprouts and carrots and I forget what else from out of his hat because I didn't see them when he walked in the door. Cranberry sauce from the can that retained its perfect can shape when removed. Gravy that was half store-bought and half pan drippings. [info]moroccomole made garlicky mashed potatoes and a chocolate pie to go with the apple and pumpkin ones I'd already done up.

Somehow in the middle of all this, a wooden cutting board sitting on the stove caught fire a little. I have no idea how the burner got turned on but it did and when ZTS said, "What's that I smell?" I didn't know. But then I figured out that shit was burning. Nothing was destroyed and we lived to eat more foods.

Then we all sat around, food-drugged. Watched "UHF."

Japanese Persona Passed SCA [Nov. 27th, 2009|12:22 pm]

bearassed
Your alternate name and badge have been registered:

Gillian MacLachlan de Holrode. Alternate name Tachibana no Hiromasa and badge.

Vert, a crane volant contourny, wings addorsed and on a chief argent three Japanese maple leaves gules.

There was some question about the registerability of Japanese maples leaves and whether they were known to Europeans in period. Eastern Crown provided some research into the question, which is summarized here:

In the late Ming period (1368-1644), Chinese porcelains were exported to Europe and Japan by the Dutch and Portuguese, and earlier to the Middle East. Japanese imari ware was first exported by the Dutch East India company c. 1650, with more than 50,000 pieces exported by 1659. Maples were listed as a common motif in imari ware. [Goro Shimura, The Story of Imari: The Symbols and Mysteries of Antique Japanese Porcelain; http://books.google.com/books?id=p9JqaKSNah4C&pg=PA25]

An example of 16th C (Momoyama Period) lacquerware that was produced for the European market is in the Kyoto Museum [http://www.kyohaku.go.jp/eng/syuzou/meihin_%83%7B%83%5E%83%93%83%7D%83b%83v%8C%C3%82%A2/urusi/item03.html]. The item description is: "This chest is an example of 'Nanban (Southern Barbarian) lacquerware,' produced for the European market....The lid and body of this chest are decorated with designs of birds and animals, including...maple...The great number of existing examples suggest that a large number of such export chests were produced to order for Europeans."

Therefore, we are giving the submitter the benefit of the doubt: Japanese maple leaves are allowed as flora native to Asia, but known to Europeans in period. They will be considered artistic variants of European maple leaves, blazoned, but not granting difference.

There is a step from period practice for use of the Japanese maple leaves, which are non-European flora not known to be used as charges in period European heraldry.

Turkey Day [Nov. 27th, 2009|08:19 am]

norcalpaco
Thanksgiving was very nice this year. Lots of good people and fantastic food.

My parents stopped by for a quick drive-by visit as they were passing through on their way to Eureka. That was unexpected, but nice. Right after they left, we headed up the peninsula for the fantastic spread that [info]spitemeat and his wife had prepared. There was so much food and it was all excellent. The company was wonderful, too.

I’m intending to stay as far away as I can from any retail establishment today. I did, however, take advantage of some Amazon Black Friday specials. I haven’t seen any special on anything I’m looking for that would justify putting up with the retail madness today.

My main plan for today is making more progress on painting the kitchen cabinetry.

Thanksgiving Bits and RWP [Nov. 27th, 2009|09:47 am]

shinysayyadina
Thanksgiving was lovely with company of Lizs18, T. and later C. However, I
would have had more fun were I not so tired that I fell asleep at 9pm.

***

Henceforth, I am at the office and still incredibly groggy and tired despite
having a giant pile of caffeine. Tired of being sick for sure and bored, but
am currently amusing myself by looking up Solstikamas gifts for friends and
family. This means I usually find something I want, too. Currently looking
at Dirty Coast:

ZOMG: I need this:

https://hb-secure.com/dirtycoast/product_view.php?id=187

True Blood fans (again, like me) may also dig this one:

https://hb-secure.com/dirtycoast/product_view.php?id=171

***

Anarchic splendor at the office: one woman came down to the IT department
(all four of us) and said “I’m not calling you if my machine breaks or I
can’t get email; I’m going home.” As she steps out, “…and don’t you
dare fix it!”

It feels like The Breakfast Club.

***

Now, for RWP:

Reading: Under in the Mere which I had misplaced so could not
finish:/ Lo, it is here now.

WritingTweaking and editing my sacrifice story and writing some other
ideas. Wheee!

Wearing: Black cardigan, BPAL Chrysanthemum Moon shirt, black skirt,
skull and rose bloomers, red/black striped socks, pearlized black clog boots
(which make me feel very very glam indeed), BPAL’s Lilith and the Jarocho
and earrings (red floral drops)from Element and Artifact.

Planning: Visit to DE this weekend with a stop at Between Books
(!:)), sleep tonight, reading and knitting a neck warmer.

How about you? What are you RWP?

Me on the Bridge
On the Bridge

I drove home yesterday in food-induced stupor. Why is that all the good things have to be so bad for you? Tryptophan-laden turkey, buttery mashed potatoes, salty cornbread stuffing, and the syrupy-goodness that is pecan pie. I was beat when I got home after the three-hour drive, but it did give me a chance to unwind in a sense. While I love visiting family, I love sleeping in my own bed more.

Hometown Museum Coming SoonOn Wednesday, I did run about town and take a few photos. The bridge above is an old bridge from the turn of the 20th century. My grandfather played on it as a child and the town restored and preserved it as a pedestrian bridge this past year. It's one of the more pleasant changes about town.

I'm not so sure about this museum that will be opening soon though. I think this used to be a small grocery and suspect the mummies may be made from left over store manikins and two-ply Charmin.

On a historical maintenance note, I was chatting on my laptop for a bit on Wednesday in the town library. While there, the dancer guy from this entry was there, sitting at a table across the way. I'm not sure if he recognized me or not, but the dragon tattoo on his forehead that I noted last summer is still there. I guess it's not temporary. Wow...

Did I mention that it's really good to be home?
